Atletico Madrid Coach Diego Simeone Tests Positive for COVID-19

Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has tested positive for COVID-19, the club announced yesterday. The news comes just days before the team’s first La Liga match of the season on Sunday against Granada. Simeone, who has already entered his 10-day quarantine period, has been asymptomatic thus far, according to media reports.

Atletico Madrid issued a statement on their website, stating that Simeone was tested verbally as part of La Liga’s protocol and came up positive. The club added that the coach was isolated in his home and in good health.

Assistant coach German Burgos, who has worked with Simeone since 2011, will take his place during his absence. The team will continue its normal training regime, according to the statement released by the club.

Simeone is widely considered to be one of the best tacticians in the sport. He took over as the head coach of Atletico Madrid in 2011, and has since led the team to numerous victories including two Europa League titles and one Spanish league championship.

COVID-19 has thrown a wrench in many sports teams’ training and match schedules, and this latest news further emphasizes the importance of continued diligence and precautions during the pandemic.

Atletico Madrid’s first La Liga match of the season against Granada will be an important test for the team in Simeone’s absence. The club has yet to release a statement on whether other team members have been tested or are in quarantine as a result of Simeone’s positive test.
